Earlier this year, I was talking with one of the world’s top Internet pros. He’s not one of those “gurus” who keeps jamming your inbox with yet another get-rich-quick scheme. He’s actually the guy in the background who’s orchestrated the web marketing activities of many of the biggest names you’ve heard of. We were lamenting how too many business owners spend thousands of dollars and months of their time putting up a website — only to be dismayed wondering when all the visitors will appear. What’s worse, when they try to find themselves on Google, using keywords and terms appropriate to their company, their website doesn’t even appear in the rankings. “Why is my business not showing up on Google?” seems to be the most common complaint today. In fact, it’s so common that I decided it was important enough to dedicate an entire issue of the Instant Income Revenue Report to solving this dilemma. Today I’ll be explaining how to get listed on page one of Google’s search results for your type of business… in the next 24 hours… absolutely free.

How to Get Google to Become Your Most Active Business Partner Getting traffic at your website isn’t rocket science. In fact, the world’s #1 search engine and traffic generator — Google — wants you to be successful. When you set up your site the way Google likes to see it, Google rewards you with higher rankings. (The reverse is also true: Fail to do what Google wants and it will punish you with lower rankings and sometimes by even “de-indexing” or blacklisting you.)

Step #1 — Set aside 40 minutes to get your company listed in “Google Places”

Formerly known as Google Local, this service allows local businesses to create a single page in Google that contains basic information like company name, address, phone number, and so on — but also contains reviews of your business by consumers, coupons you can create and upload to encourage Google browsers to visit your business, plus links to your website (if you currently have one). If you don’t have a website yet, your Google Places page can act as a pretty good substitute until you do. So how does Google Places land you on page one of Google? Whenever a local consumer searches for “refrigerators” or “lawnmower repair” or “deli sandwiches,” Google returns — at the top of page one of the search results — a list of several LOCAL businesses that fit that description. It even presents a little map of the featured businesses with their locations marked with tiny red circles. Google Places can actually help you get ranked higher than competitors who are spending money on pay-per-click, SEO and other services to get on page one of Google. If you haven’t yet created your Google Places page, take the time to do it soon. In fact, if you serve a local market, you cannot ignore this simple, but VITAL LINK to your local customers. Not taking action also has one other troublesome downside… many unscrupulous business owners are routinely “claiming” the Google Places pages of their local competitors, then benefiting when consumers visit the wrong store. Don’t let this latest type of “identity theft” happen to you.

Step #2 — Get started by creating a Google Gmail account

To start the process, go to www.google.com/gmail and create a new Gmail account to access the many free services Google offers to small businesses. (Google Places is just one of these.) Be careful to make this email address very generic since the public will see it. Once you have your email address, find your Place page in one of two ways: (1) Do a Google search for your type of business, listing your city in the search window — for instance, “taxidermy Roanoke.” When the listing is returned and your business appears there, click on “Place page,” then click on “Business owner?” in the upper right-hand corner. Or… (2) Go directly to Google Places here. Either way, sign in with your new Google email address. One you arrive at the next page, click on the button called “List your business.” You’ll automatically be taken to a page where you’ll need to enter your business’s main phone number to see if Google Maps already has some information about your business. You’ll then be able to edit any existing information and add new details. (If you don’t see your business after typing in your phone number, click “Add a new listing.”) Once you find your company name on Google Maps, claim your Google Places page by clicking on the link called “Edit.” Complete the pre-populated form you see there with basic information such as your hours of operation, types of goods and services you provide and more. Once you do that, you’ll need to verify that you are the rightful owner of the business. (If you clicked on “Add a new listing,” you’ll be presented with this same form — except that it will be blank and you’ll have to fill in all fields.) Once you have saved your listing, you’ll be taken through an automated verification process, either by telephone, or via postcard.

Here is what a well optimized local listing looks like on Google Places: It is important to use the words that you want your business to be listed under in Google on the details of your listing, the categories and everywhere possible.. the words are used to”qualify” you for searches in your market area. In this sample, the majority of searches are “dry cleaner” and “dry cleaning”. Additional details is an area you can list more services, as well as strengthen the listing for your main business category. Then when you search for your business, here how it will appear in the Google search results results:

Step #3 — Monitor your Google Places page

Of course, you shouldn’t stop at simply claiming your Google Places page and completing the form. What else can you do? * Encourage your customers to write positive reviews about you. Hand them a business card with your Google Place page address so they can easily find it. * Create coupons or special offers and upload them to your Google Place page. Make certain they can be used at any time or have an expiration date that’s clearly visible. Remember when developing your offer that Google Places visitors will usually be new customers for you. What would you normally offer new customers? * You can even upload photos and video of your store, your satisfied customers, a special video message from you and more. Even if you don’t have a website yet, you should immediately complete your Google Places page if you own a retail or service company that serves a local market.
